Born in California, I moved to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to attend John Woolman School, an alternative Quaker high school. My art education began there with the drawing of the human figure. After graduating from high school, I completed a semester of college. I then left the United States to work for a year in London, England. I returned to make my home in Nevada City, California in 1970. For many years, I have enjoyed working with paper as a support for my paintings. I found myself digging into and almost wearing through the paper. In 2007, I started painting with oils—a natural transition. What I trust and look for in a painting is the odd angle or intimation of something weird or quirky that celebrates a sense of place or feeling. There is often a figure, or a group of figures, in my work.
